Recession? What Recession?

What is the most common line you’ve heard in the last 2 years?

‘Don’t start a business during a recession’. Am I right?

Well, we’re still in an economic downturn but plenty of great start-ups have come out of it. In the business world opportunities never cease – so let’s turn this downturn into an opportunity.

First up, stop feeding yourself with a diet of negativity and yes, switch off that TV as soon as another serving of bad news is about to be presented to you. Stop the blame game and look on the bright side.

Many billionaires have emerged from a recession. You might think this is an exaggeration – but you would be wrong. Bill Gates made his fortune when he founded Microsoft in 1975. Other businesses to start-up during a recession include HP, CNN and FedEX. I think we all get the picture now.

So let’s summarise some of the key advantages for starting-up during recessions:

-There are more unemployed skilled workers.

-Many other entrepreneurs will be scared off by the black clouds of the recession, which will ensure less competition for your business during this period.

-The majority of companies are not hiring, so finding a job in a big company seems nearly impossible.

-People will continue to buy things and spend money on services during a recession.

If you’re still in doubt, take this hint from Harry S. Truman: “It’s a recession when your neighbour loses his job; it’s a depression when you lose yours.”

Become your own boss and perhaps you will begin to ask:  “Recession? What Recession?”
